Pathology Welcomes New Faculty: Drs. Bullock, Gosse, Kanangat, and Parsons

Dr. Bullock

Grant Bullock, MD, PhD

Dr. Bullock joined UI Pathology on February 28, 2023, overseeing various area of VA CP and rotating on the UI hematopathology/flow cytometry and coagulation services. He received his M.D. from the University of Iowa M.S.T.P. College of Medicine. He completed his Resident in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and his Fellowship in Hematopathology at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA.  He formally was an Assistant Director of Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratory at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA.  His interests are deep sea fishing, date nights his wife and spending time with his family.


Dr. Gosse

Matthew Gosse, MD

Dr. Gosse joined UI Pathology on June 30, 2023 as part of our surgical pathology and renal pathology teams. An Iowa City native, he received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Iowa in 2013 and M.D. degree in 2018 from the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa during which he was a Pathology Extern (2016-2017). In 2022, he then completed his residency in Anatomic/Clinical Pathology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) which was followed by a fellowship in Surgical Pathology with Gastrointestinal Emphasis at UIHC in 2022-2023. Outside of work he enjoys spending time outdoors and traveling with his two children (Luna and River) and wife (Megan).


Dr. Kanangat

Siva Kanangat, PhD

Dr. Kanangat joined UI Pathology on June 2, 2023 as the Director of the HLA/Histocompatibility laboratories.  He received his M.Sc. degree in Microbiology and Immunology from University of Madras in Vellore, India and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology at the same institution in the Tuberculosis Research Center.  He studied Molecular Virology and Viral Immunology during his postdoctoral training at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Worked as Assistant Professor, department of Rheumatology/Internal Medicine focusing on the role of Interleukin-1 receptor Antagonist and Matrix Metalloproteinases in the pathogenesis and treatment of Scleroderma, mentoring research projects of Allergy and Immunology Fellows.  Dr. Kanangat served as the Histocompatibility Specialist/Assistant Director, HLA Laboratory in the Department of Pathology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN from 2008-2010.  He formally was the Laboratory Director, Technical Supervisor, and Clinical Consultant for the CLIA accredited Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory, and Director of the Molecular Oncology Lab in the Department of Pathology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.  At Rush, he was involved in mentoring and teaching Pathology residents, master's in medical laboratory science, and Health Science Ph.D students.  Dr. Kanangat's extracurricular likings are watching basketball, tennis, soccer; listening to melodious Indian songs, and country music, watching comedy shows, and cardiovascular exercise.


Dr. Parsons

Meredith Parsons, MD

Dr. Parsons joins UI Pathology on July 31, 2023, as part of our transfusion medicine and clinical microbiology services within Clinical Pathology. She received her M.D. from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and is a former Pathology Extern.  She also completed the Clinical Pathology Residency Program, Medical Microbiology Fellowship, and Transfusion Medicine Fellowship here at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Outside of work she enjoys tending to her absurd number of houseplants and equally absurd cats, as well as “old lady” crafting and dreaming about new travel destinations.
