Staff Spotlight - Claire McGranahan

Claire comes to the Department with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Iowa, and a certificate in graphic design. She has built her 13-year career in marketing and communications in the greater Iowa City area, focusing on the business, education, and health care industries. Claire discovered her love for entrepreneurialism during her temporary appointment with the University of Iowa’s John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) in 2015. Following that, Claire acted as the marketing director for a statewide audiology company, and then a local, family-owned international music company.

My husband was born and raised in Iowa City. I met him when I moved in next door to him during college. He and I celebrated our 10-year anniversary this past July! We have just one fur baby -- an anxious orange tabby cat.

I have a lot of interests as I love to try new things. This year, I've done a lot of reading, watercolor painting, hand lettering, and nurturing my potted flower garden. I also enjoy traveling, yoga (especially hot yoga!), hiking, listening to music, and volunteering in my community. I'm on the executive committee for the Iowa City Area Business Partnership’s Ambassador program, and an active volunteer for Think Iowa City, First Round, and even Bug Soother.

I am a foodie. My go-to for Italian or wood-fired pizza is Basta. Deluxe makes simple and delectable sandwiches with French butter. La Vecina is probably my favorite for Mexican food (and they just joined CHOMP!). I could go on and on.

What is your dream job and why? This has changed a lot this year! I realize my dream job isn't tied to a title -- it's a position in which I can communicate with a lot of people, use my creative talents, and achieve work-life balance. So, I may have just started it!

Most fascinating place ever visited or lived? There is quite a gamut -- I find the Dickeyville Grotto to be curiously fascinating. I also love deserts and oceans. One of my favorite recent trips was to Utah; my husband and I took my mom to Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the northern rim of the Grand Canyon. The views in all three national parks are awe-inspiring and unforgettable.

Favorite book or movie? If I had to pick just one, my favorite recent read is The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. She is my favorite author, and a graduate of our own Writer's Workshop.

If I had 3 wishes they would be for 1. Certain good health for all my loved ones. 2. The ability to speak and understand all languages. 3. To make a positive difference in the world.

Fun fact: I trained as a barista at Java House during college. I still maintain an espresso bar in my home.

I'm really happy to be a part of this department. Everyone I've met has been so nice and welcoming. Thank you!
