Staff Spotlight - Katie Larson Ode, MD

Dr. Larson Ode has been Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes since 2011.

I joined the University of Iowa Division of Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes in 2011, which was my first time working for or attending the University of Iowa. Of course, it doesn't feel that way because Amy Calhoun, MD, Genetics (my twin sister), did her residency and chief residency here, which meant that I came to visit several times. Also, I am the grateful mom of a patient of the Stead Family Children's Hospital. My daughter Bekah had a missed diagnosis of hydrocephalus while we were living in Minnesota. When I came here to take my faculty position, Dr. Tsalikian helped me get my insurance set up right away so Bekah could have her shunt placed by Dr. Menezes. The surgery went well, but I have slept in our PICU as a mommy, and I can say from personal experiences we have some *really* great nurses in our PICU! Bekah has been healthy since, although she has ongoing health challenges, and we are so grateful for our awesome team here at the University of Iowa with Dr. Reasoner, Dr. Curtis, and Dr. Stier!

I met my husband & best friend, Seth, when I was 19 years old and we have been married for 18 years. We have 3 children- Paul (nearly 16!), Bekah (10) and Grace (7).

I like to spend my time chasing Bekah, reading with Grace, telling silly jokes with Paul, and watching science videos with my husband. When I have free time, I love to read fantasy and sci fi books. I also love hiking and running.

It sounds corny- but this is my dream job! (just if I never had to write any notes and everything I needed for my patients would always get magically paid for . . .)

I don't know about fascinating, but probably my favorite place I have ever visited was Oxford, England. The library! the old books! Magdalen College! the pub where CS Lewis and JRR Tolkein used to meet!

Favorite sports team? Minnesota Vikings! (although we are terrible this year, sigh).

Favorite book or movie? Favorite book- "Dawn Treader" by CS Lewis.

Fun Fact: I am 7 minutes older than my twin sister, Amy. We were undiagnosed twins, born at 32-34 weeks both breech vaginal delivery. Amy outweighed me by 4 oz. We were delivered by a surgeon at the little hospital in Forest City, IA. They only had one incubator and they put us both in it together!
