Staff Spotlight - Nancy Ray

I'm a Research Associate in Pediatrics. I am the lab manager for Dr. Bermick's laboratory where we work on neonatal immunology. I used to work at the university as a postdoc, then assistant research scientist. I have worked for the university for almost 15 years.

I have two, 14 year old teenagers who were born premature at UIHC and spent some time in the NICU. They are now doing well in their freshman year of high school. My husband does part-time computer work and spends a lot of time making things in his shop at home.

I like to write about science, but haven't done that for a while. I also like to read, hike and go fishing with my son. My daughter and I love to go shopping together.

My dream job is a job where I can keep learning new things and can contribute to research and new discoveries that lead to new treatments and improvements in human health.

Most fascinating place ever lived or visited? The most fascinating place I visited was Rome because of its amazing history and all the ruins and ancient structures that can be found there.

Favorite meal or restaurant? My favorite restaurant is Reza's in Chicago. They have the best middle eastern food that I love.

Favorite book or movie? My favorite book is The Shipping News by Annie Proulx and I love the move Office Space.

If I had 3 wishes they would be: 1. That the pandemic was over. 2. That all cancers became successfully treatable. 3. That my children grow up to be successful adults with happy families.

Fun fact: I stayed in dorm-like room with my husband at the Pasteur Institute in Paris for a few days while visiting there for a conference.
