The Department of Pediatrics, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine as part of the newly created Gene and Cell Therapy Program for Treatment of Hearing and Balance Disorders invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position with expertise in inner ear biology at the Assistant Professor level. This position includes a 12-month appointment, fringe benefits, competitive start-up package, laboratory space, excellent core facilities and extensive opportunities for collaborative research, and participation in graduate training programs and junior faculty development programs.
All applicants must have a PhD and/or MD degree. Existing funding is not required for the application. Applicants should have a demonstrated ability in research with clear potential for supporting an innovative and productive research program. Preference will be given to individuals with a strong publication record who have developed and/or utilize state-of-the art techniques to address emerging and critical questions in inner ear biology. In particular, we are interested in individuals with a research focus on stem cells, degeneration, regeneration, development, and genome engineering. Applicants will be judged on their potential to initiate and maintain a vigorous, independent research program and to teach and train students and postdoctoral fellows. The successful candidate should have the demonstrated capacity to foster an environment in which excellence in research, teaching, and scholarship can flourish, as well as experience and interest in developing and leading research programs.
The University of Iowa has dedicated substantial new investments for Neuroscience which consists of a community of more than 100 faculty members across 5 colleges and 26 departments and includes the recent founding of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute and creation of a new undergraduate major in Neuroscience. In particular, the University of Iowa offers a rich and highly collaborative group of researchers focused on auditory neuroscience that spans across several colleges involving both basic science and clinical departments. The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology consists of 24 primary and 8 secondary faculty members with strengths in cell and developmental biology, neurobiology, cancer biology, vascular biology, stem-cell biology, molecular medicine, cystic fibrosis, and gene therapy. The department is also the administrative home of the University's Gene Therapy Center, an entity that funds, and otherwise supports, research in molecular medicine.

The individual selected will join the Division of Child Neurology to provide patient care, teaching, and consultative services as a pediatric neurologist.
The division of Child Neurology is committed to providing excellent clinical care, educating trainees at all levels, and advancing knowledge through biomedical research. All child neurology faculty members are board certified in neurology with special qualifications in child neurology. Child neurology faculty members work together with pediatric neurology nurse practitioners and specialized nursing staff to deliver outstanding care in all aspects of child neurology. Faculty and staff work closely with other clinicians throughout the University of Iowa Health Care system to offer our patients comprehensive care. The division has particular clinical expertise in epilepsy, neurogenetics and neuromuscular disorders. As part of the Iowa Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, the division provides a full range of treatment and evaluation including ketogenic diet, vagal nerve stimulator, and surgical evaluation. The neuromuscular program provides multidisciplinary care to individuals with diseases of the muscles or nerves. Child neurology clinics are held in the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Specialty Clinic and in outreach clinics across the state of Iowa.

The Center for Disabilities and Development integrates a broad array of clinical services in one location, including developmental and behavioral pediatrics, psychology, speech-language pathology, occupational and physical therapy, social work, education, audiology, and nursing, and thus provides an ideal environment for exceptional patient care, education and research. The Division of Cardiology at the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics provides compassionate, family-centered, and state-of-the-art delivery of care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Patients are followed through the transition to adulthood. Dedicated staff have expertise in acquired heart diseases such as cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, blood lipid disorders, congenital heart disease, cardiac dysfunction in malignancy, and cardiac implications associated with pediatric obesity. The division provides the only expertise for electrophysiology, diagnostic, interventional and transplant services for children and youth in the state of Iowa. Skilled surgical support and exceptional critical care postoperative support has outcomes that have excellent results in national databases. The Division of Cardiology at the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics provides compassionate, family-centered, and state-of-the-art delivery of care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Patients are followed through the transition to adulthood. Dedicated staff have expertise in acquired heart diseases such as cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, blood lipid disorders, congenital heart disease, cardiac dysfunction in malignancy, and cardiac implications associated with pediatric obesity. The division provides the only expertise for electrophysiology, diagnostic, interventional and transplant services for children and youth in the state of Iowa. The selected individual will participate in the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents served through the University of Iowa Stead Family Pediatric Specialty Clinics, with opportunities to expand clinical services across divisions including in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Transplant, Hematology, Nephrology, Neurology, and/or Allergy and Immunology, depending on the selected individual’s experience and interest. We are currently recruiting for two Pediatric Health Psychologists and one Pediatric Pain Psychologist. In addition, the Department seeks to expand inpatient consultation/liaison service for pediatric patients who are admitted for acute or chronic medical conditions. The position also includes supervision of psychology practicum students and postdoctoral fellows as available.

Position Details:
University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics seeks a heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and transplant cardiologist. The University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics Heart transplant program has performed 25 heart transplants in the past three years and is in addition to placement of 16 ventricular assist devices. Appointment rank is open and may be to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest. Appointment rank to Instructor of Pediatrics (non-tenure or clinical track) may also be considered. The individual selected will join the Division of Cardiology to provide patient care, teaching, and consultative services.
The Division of Cardiology at the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics provides compassionate, family-centered, and state-of-the-art delivery of care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Patients are followed through the transition to adulthood. Dedicated staff have expertise in acquired heart diseases such as cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, blood lipid disorders, congenital heart disease, cardiac dysfunction in malignancy, and cardiac implications associated with pediatric obesity. The division provides the only expertise for electrophysiology, diagnostic, interventional and transplant services for children and youth in the state of Iowa. Skilled surgical support and exceptional critical care postoperative support has outcomes that have excellent results in national databases. The division has a multi-purpose diagnostic and interventional procedure lab which is constantly expanding and including state-of-the-art technologies.

The UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics comprises the medical staff of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, Iowa’s only nationally ranked children’s hospital and home to the state’s only accredited Level 1 Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Center. The ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital trains 47 pediatric resident physicians. For its 2022-23 edition of “Best Children’s Hospitals,” U.S. News & World Report ranked UI Stead Family Children's Hospital in seven pediatric specialties: neonatology, pediatric diabetes and endocrinology, pediatric hematology-oncology, pediatric nephrology, pediatric neurology and neurosurgery, pediatric orthopedics, and pediatric pulmonology.
