Sarah Haskell, DO

Associate Professor of Pediatrics-Critical Care

Introduction

Laboratory work is focused on how the fetal environment impacts cardiovascular development and disease. In the United States, currently 10% of pregnant women are treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Because SSRIs cross the placenta, the safety of these medications is of concern to the developing fetus. We are currently using an exposure model to investigate the effects of the antidepressant sertraline on cardiac development.

My clinical research interest is in optimizing pediatric cardiopulmonary arrest care in both in-patient and out-patient settings. We are currently part of a multi-center study investigating the quality of pediatric resuscitation.

  • Resident in Pediatrics, University of Iowa Children's Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa
  • Fellow in Pediatric Critical Care, University of Iowa Children's Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa

Research Interests

  • Effects of SSRI Exposure on Cardiac Development
  • Effects of SSRI Exposure on Heart Rate Variability and Morphology in Infants
  • My laboratory utilizes an intrauterine mouse model to investigate the effects of SSRI exposure on cardiac development and the programming of adult cardiovascular disease. We are assessing the role of SSRIs and serotonin on heart cell proliferation, signaling pathways, and hemodynamics
