The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics plays an important role in the education and training of professional and graduate students in medicine, dentistry, and nursing.
Eleven students are currently pursuing PhD degrees in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics as part of the department's graduate program. Three of these students are members of the NIH-supported Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), pursuing combined MD and PhD degrees. The significant number of students enrolled in the MSTP is reflective of the major contributions made by our laboratories toward the understanding of clinically-relevant diseases such as muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, diabetes and hypertension.
Graduate Studies
The graduate program in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics offers opportunities for training and research leading to a Ph.D. degree . Students join an active group of faculty members and advanced students at an exciting time of expanding interdisciplinary biomedical research
Postdoctoral Training
Postdoctoral fellows are an integral part in our research mission. Our department provides training for select individuals who have demonstrated promise for productive research and encourage them to apply for grants or special fellowships in their area of research.
Medical Student Fellowship
The Wellstone Medical Student Fellowship is open to students currently enrolled in any medical school within in the United States. Fellows participate in the clinical care of muscular dystrophy patients and evaluate muscle biopsies . Research opportunities include basic science projects and translational studies. The fellowship provides a stipend and benefits, as well as funds to attend a national scientific meeting.
