Interventional Psychiatry

Welcome!

Interventional psychiatry is a procedural subspecialty of psychiatry focused on the use of novel neurostimulation technologies and pharmaceuticals to treat mental health disorders associated with dysfunctional brain circuitry.

The interventional psychiatry service at the University of Iowa brings together clinicians and researchers in psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery with expertise in such interventional procedures as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), intranasal esketamine, infusion ketamine therapy, vagus nerve stimulation and deep brain stimulation (DBS). These clinicians specialize in the evaluation and management of patient candidates for these treatments to offer safe, appropriate, and effective care. Currently, treatment options exist for patients suffering from psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and catatonia. The interventional psychiatry service collaborates closely with neuroscientists at the Iowa Neuroscience Institute and other premier research institutions to investigate new cutting-edge treatments, gather sophisticated physiological data to understand disease, and explore the circuits of the human brain to offer the highest quality patient care and state-of-the-art treatment options for optimizing patient outcomes in this rapidly advancing discipline.

The Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation encompasses an interdisciplinary, highly collaborative team of physicians and scientists at the University of Iowa.
