Weiren Liu has made service to others a cornerstone of his life. He volunteered for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for over ten years, before being accepted by the Carver College of Medicine to pursue a degree in medicine. His artistic creations as a volunteer included a coloring book for pediatric inpatients and decorated thermoplastic masks for pediatric radiotherapy patients. Our department was fortunate to benefit from the time and talents of this young man, who used his skills to personalize these masks and alleviate the anxiety inherent in the procedure. During the time that we were lucky enough to work with him, he made over 70 masks to the delight of our pediatric patients. Upon his graduation we were honored to have him present to the department a “Super Herky” mask that reflects his devotion to patient care. He will soon begin the next phase of his career as a resident specializing in Radiation Oncology.
