U.S. News & World Report ranks UI Urology among the best in the nation

In its 2023-24 Best Hospitals rankings released in August, U.S. News ranked our urology care as “High Performing,” placing us in the top 10% in the nation.

In its 2023-24 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings released in June, U.S. News ranked our pediatric urology care at No. 48 in the nation.

UI Urology among world’s first to be approved for new endourology fellowship focus

In addition to the existing Combined Fellowship in Endourology, the Department of Urology’s Endourological Society fellowship program will offer applicants a second option for fellowship training beginning with the 2024 match: the Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Urologic Oncology Fellowship. Our program is one of the first in the world to receive approval from the Endourological Society to offer this option, based on our ability to offer a multidisciplinary approach along with a sufficient volume for the minimally invasive treatment of urologic malignancy.

Dr. Elizabeth B. Takacs is lead author of a study that received “Best Poster” honors at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association in Chicago. The study, “Radiation Exposure During Sacral Neuromodulation Lead Placement: Multi-Institutional Descriptive Study,” also included UI Urology authors Dr. Annah J. Vollstedt and resident physician Joanna Orzel.

Dr. Paul T. Gellhaus received the department’s Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Douglas W. Storm assumed editorship of Dialogues in Pediatric Urology, a publication of the Societies for Pediatric Urology. The first issue under Dr. Storm’s leadership, focused on education, was published in May.

Four providers in the Department of Urology received the UI Health Care Patient’s Choice Award for fiscal year 2022: Dr. Angelena B. EdwardsKristine Bonnett, ARNPSarah Fees, ARNP, and Audrey Watkins, ARNP. Patient’s Choice honors go to UI Health Care providers whose aggregate score on patient surveys ranks in the top 10% nationally.

Study of gem/doce for high-risk NMIBC named most impactful article by Journal of Urology

Drs. Vignesh T. PackiamRyan L. SteinbergKenneth G. NepplePaul T. Gellhaus, and Michael A. O’Donnell are authors of a paper named Most Impactful Article of 2022 by the Journal of Urology.

The article — “Sequential intravesical gemcitabine and docetaxel for bacillus Calmette-Guerin-naive high-risk nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer” — reported the results of a milestone study of the groundbreaking therapy created at the University of Iowa by Dr. O’Donnell.

Authors also included resident physicians Alex C. Martin and Jordan Richards, Carver College of Medicine student Ian M. McElree, and Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center biostatistician Sarah L. Mott.
