Faculty Focus: Q&A with Dr. James G. McCoy

Dr. McCoy earned his MD from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and received the Alcock Award for Student Research in Urology. He then completed urology residency here in the Department of Urology under Dr. Richard Williams. He served as a staff urologist at the Horan Hospital in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, before returning to Iowa City to join the staff at Mercy Iowa City, where he provided urology care for more than 30 years. He joined the University of Iowa Department of Urology faculty in January.

What’s special to you about joining the Iowa Urology team?

I joined the Iowa Urology team after more than 30 years serving urology patients through Mercy Iowa City. The acquisition of Mercy by the university allows me to continue serving the patients I have cared for all these years.

What are you looking forward to as a member of the Iowa Urology team?

I have referred patients to University of Iowa urology subspecialists for many years. Joining the team will allow for a closer collaboration with those experts.

What led you to the field of urology?

Throughout my urologic career I have enjoyed the ability to solve patient problems. Whether removing a kidney stone, clearing prostatic obstruction, or removing a cancer, urologists have the ability to dramatically improve the health of our patients.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

I am an enthusiastic birder with over 500 species on my life list. I enjoy kayaking and hiking anywhere in the outdoors and spending time with family on northern Minnesota lakes.

What’s the best advice you ever received from a mentor?

Take great care of the patients and the rest will take care of itself.

Do you have a favorite inspirational quote or motto?

Our office has had this displayed in a framed plaque in the lobby since at least the 1960s: “Happiness is an empty bladder.”
