UI Carver College of Medicine first in Iowa to receive Jointly Accredited Provider Interprofessional Continuing Education designation
After review by Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education, the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine was awarded Joint Accreditation with Commendation for a term of six years as a provider of interprofessional continuing education (IPCE) for health care teams. This is the first time the college has received this designation, and it is the only continuing medical education (CME) provider in Iowa to do so.
This means that the Division of Continuing Medical Education’s programming for nurses, pharmacists, athletic trainers, social workers, dieticians, and physicians will all soon be accessible through a unified IPCE credit application process.
“Joint Accreditation will open up a lot of new learners for us,” says Greg Nelson, MA, RN, assistant dean for statewide clinical education programs and CME director.
“Enhancing our statewide educational presence is core to our tripartite mission of excellence in education, research, and patient care,” says Patricia Winokur, MD, executive dean of the college. “Joint Accreditation will allow us to provide the highest standard of continuing education for health professionals across Iowa.”
There is growing evidence that IPCE is a critical component of improving care. By allowing the college to provide multi-professional learning opportunities, this accreditation will ensure that CME programs serve the needs of patients and the public as well as advancing the individual expertise of health care professionals.
“Interprofessional continuing education will be planned by the health care team, for the health care team,” says Joe Szot, MD, MACP, associate dean for CME and integrative education. “This will promote teamwork, collaboration, and better outcomes for our patients by getting more health professionals working together.”
