Lois Geist, MD

Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Development

Dr. Geist has primary responsibility for the human resources and faculty development activities of the office. Her efforts focus on large and small group seminars as well as individual consultation related to the growth and success of faculty.  She is also responsible for the promotion and tenure process, and oversees the annual review process. She is well versed in faculty-related policy and procedure, and at helping to make connections with other faculty in the College to support a robust career development plan for each member of the College. Outside the office she is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care where she is an active clinician in her discipline.

Shamika Patterson

Shamika Harris

Human Resources Coordinator

Shamika Harris is the Faculty Human Resources Coordinator for the Carver College of Medicine and serves as the initial point of contact for faculty human resources. Her duties are to coordinate and facilitate the effective operations of faculty human resources needs by collaborating with Health Care Human Resources and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Development. In addition, Shamika provides a wide range of human resources support and consulting services to faculty, staff, supervisors, and administration.

Paul Casella

Paul Casella, MFA

Academic/Scientific Editorial Manager

Paul is a teacher, editor, consultant, and presentation skills coach. A graduate of Dartmouth College and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he has presented over 3000 seminars on written and spoken communication skills to physicians and scientists at medical centers and meetings across North America and Europe. A founding member of the Health Care Communications Group, Paul authored two chapters of their award-winning book Writing, Speaking, and Communication Skills for Health Professionals (Yale University Press 2001). In 2000 Paul began working for the Office of Faculty Affairs and Development, leading seminars, editing manuscripts and grant applications, coaching speakers, and otherwise serving the advanced communication needs of the faculty. He also holds the title of adjunct assistant professor.


Denise Jurca

Denise Jurca, MBA

Program Manager

Denise provides leadership and oversight to the CCOM Office of Faculty Affairs and Development in the design, planning, promotion, and implementation of programs, organizations, and policies and procedures pertaining to the faculty in the College.

Denise has a BBA in Finance and an MBA from the University of Iowa, as well as Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Her experience includes serving as a program manager for the University of New Mexico, as an implementation consultant for Agresso North America in California, and most recently as director of operations for the California TelehealthNetwork

Jamie Holmes

Administrative Services Coordinator

Jamie joined the Office of Faculty Affairs in April 2017 and serves as the coordinator of a variety of faculty development meetings and events. She is the first point of contact for our office, and she serves as the primary support person for Associate Dean Lois Geist and Assistant Dean David Moser. In addition to her support role, she manages the office events calendar and website, and addresses faculty issues pertinent to the Academic and Professional Record.  Jamie received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Iowa in 2001. She has worked in the Executive Dean’s office for the past four years, most recently serving as the administrative coordinator for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education mock visit, which occurred in February 2017.
