Medical Spanish & Medical French Language Programs

Develop Second Language Skills for Medicine

Through generous support in memory of Barry Feeman, the Global Health Programs Office offers medical Spanish and medical French classes during the fall and spring semesters for low intermediate to advanced level students. In these sessions, students work on improving practical spoken Spanish or French with native speaker instructors. Our goal is to help you use the language strategically to accomplish objectives and resolve conflicts in culturally accurate circumstances using appropriate vocabulary. Class activities will help you to:

  • Develop the ability to maintain a conversation, handle common situations in Spanish or French, and negotiate differences of opinion related to general life and medical situations
  • Enhance your fluency
  • Acquire confidence in using your Spanish or French with patients
  • Expand your vocabulary
  • Acquire information about life, problems, and current trends in the world
  • Develop sensitivity to traditions and customs

Weekly Sessions

Two hours of weekly instruction begins approximately one month after the start of the semester.  Enrollees commit to ongoing and engaged participation for 10 weeks. There is no fee for the program and it is limited to University of Iowa medical students.
