Michael Welsh, MD, University of Iowa professor of internal medicine, has received the 2025 Canada Gairdner International Award for his research on cystic fibrosis (CF), which paved the way to new therapies that have transformed the health and life expectancy of people with CF.

Mgbechi Erondu, MD, MFA, serves as a clinical assistant professor in Stanford Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine. A pediatric palliative care specialist, Erondu simultaneously completed a Master of Fine Arts at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop during her medical training at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. A group of 17 University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine faculty members will be honored for their work as scientists, scholars, and educators at the fifth annual Celebration of Excellence in Research, Scholarship, Teaching, and Service.

University of Iowa Health Care, in collaboration with Cooper University Health Care, has been awarded research funding by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to support a large clinical trial comparing two triage strategies for guiding thrombectomy, a life-saving intervention for patients with large vessel occlusion strokes. The landmark study aims to optimize emergency stroke care and improve outcomes for thousands of thrombectomy patients nationwide.

Match Day was March 21, 2025. This year, 163 students matched into 22 specialties across 32 states. One-quarter will stay in Iowa to train.
