Date: Monday, April 5, 2021

Fifteen University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine faculty members will be honored for their work as scientists, scholars, and educators at a special event April 27.

The Celebration of Excellence in Research, Scholarship, Teaching, and Service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27. This will be an in-person event for the honorees and a limited number of guests, but everyone is invited to join a livestream of the celebration at uihealthcare.org/livestream.

Following are details on the honorees:

Wall of Scholarship

The Wall of Scholarship acknowledges current UI Carver College of Medicine faculty who are first or senior authors of published research articles that have made a significant impact on a particular field of science or medicine.

Specifically, the research papers have been cited more than 1,000 times in subsequent published research articles, based on at least two of three recognized academic citation indices: Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science.

The 2020 Wall of Scholarship honorees:

  • Dale Abel, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, and director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center
  • Nancy Andreasen, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Psychiatry, the Andrew H. Woods Chair of Psychiatry, and director of the Iowa Neuroimaging Consortium
  • Daniel Diekema, MD, MS, clinical professor and director of the infectious diseases division in the Department of Internal Medicine, and associate hospital epidemiologist and associate director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at UI Hospitals & Clinics
  • Edward Filardo, PhD, research professor in the Department of Surgery

Impact Scholars

Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are selected based on the Hirsch index, also known as the H-index, which represents the number of research papers a faculty member has published, and the papers’ impact as determined by how many times they have been cited by other scientists and scholars in subsequent research articles.

For example, a researcher with an H-index of 50 has published at least 50 articles that each have been cited at least 50 times. An H-index increases as multiple papers are cited multiple times. The H-index calculations for the Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are based on research abstract and citation data from Scopus. Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are faculty who have achieved H-index scores of 100 or higher (“gold” level) and 50 or higher (“silver” level).

The 2020 Impact Scholars:

  • Michael Abramoff, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and the Robert C. Watzke, MD, Professor in Retinal Research
  • Brian Link, MD, professor in the Department of Internal Medicine
  • Steven Moore, MD, PhD, professor and director of neuropathology in the Department of Pathology, and co-director of the Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center
  • Robert Mullins, MS, PhD, professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and the Martin Carver Chair in Ocular Cell Biology
  • Stanley Perlman, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and the Mark Stinski Chair in Virology
