Marina Del Rios, MD, MS, FAHA

  •  Information as a social determinant of health.
    • Principal investigator of the NIH funded study Dime la VerDAD (Verify, Debunk And Disseminate), a 4.5 year study to evaluate the use of storytelling by promotores de salud as a communication strategy to identify and debunk misinformation on social media and improve vaccine uptake for COVID-19 and influenza in largely Hispanic communities. 
    • Multiple visiting lectures on addressing misinformation in minoritized communities
  • Cardiac arrest inequities.
    • Utilizing community level factors to improve prediction of out of hospital cardiac arrest outcome using machine learning
    • Co-investigator of the NIH funded Reducing Ethnic-racial Disparities in Cardiac Arrest Survival Outcomes (RED-CASO). This study will identify best resuscitation practices at EMS agencies with the highest survival rates for OHCA, especially at EMS agencies that work in majority Black or Hispanic communities
    • Volunteers as an instructor with Rotary Kerber HeartSafe Campaign and Project Adam to increase community bystander CPR and AED use
    • Multiple publications in peer reviewed medical journals on racial, ethnic, and gender inequities in cardiac arrest.
  • Linguistic preparedness.
    • Developed a conference and educational materials on linguistic preparedness and collaborating with interpreters to communicate with patients with limited English proficiency. 
  • Resuscitation guidelines
    • Member of the Adult Life Support Writing group for the American Heart Association 2025 resuscitation guidelines
    • Chair of the Science Subcommittee of the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Committee. In this role I provide oversight to the AHA resuscitation guidelines writing process.
  • Neighborhood health
    • Use of geographic information systems to identify hot spots of acute and chronic disease
    • Capacity building of community health workforce to increase health literacy in underserved communities
    • Partnered with community-based organizations to advocate for resources for underserved neighborhoods during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Latine health
    • Develop capacity building programs for promotores de salud (community health workers)
    • Secured philanthropic funding for Latine community-based organizations to combat COVID19 in Chicago
    • Multiple guest appearances on Spanish news media discussing health topics relevant to the Latine community

I have taught physicians in the field in Palestine, Japan, Niger, and Ecuador. I have an ongoing medical mission to Palestine, assisting the emergency physicians in Hebron with ultrasound training.
