It was exciting to be the first fellow of Social EM at UIHC and be on the cutting edge of this new branch of our specialty. In this program I was able to get involved with the roots of social EM at both local and national levels. Never before have I had dedicated time to collaborate with community organizations that provide essential resources for our most vulnerable patients. For instance, I conducted discussions with the health care providers at our county jail and penitentiary to contribute quality care to our shared incarcerated patient population. Throughout the program, I felt supported in my research and in the advancement of my education. University graduate classes were selected based on my interests and allowed development of new skill sets for later career success. For the first time in a long time, I attended lectures that I didn’t want to end! For the content was relevant, enlightening, and presented by social change makers from across the county. This fellowship was emboldening; it stoked my passion for justice and confronted me with the power, knowledge, ability, and privilege emergency medicine physicians have to advocate for patients outside of the hospital walls.
