The Gold Foundation Humanism Honor Society recognizes students who are exceptional in their compassionate and respectful relationships with patients, families, peers and staff.
The selection process evaluates medical students' interpersonal and humanistic qualities through a peer nomination survey. In the early-spring, M3s nominate their classmates, who are then assessed across four key domains: caring, competence, community service, and potential as a personal physician. A composite score is then calculated, prioritizing caring (40%), community service (30%), competence (20%), and personal-physician potential (10%)—and determines the final selection.
To qualify, students must meet vetting criteria, including maintaining above-average communication and professionalism scores in their clinical evaluations, good academic standing, and no professional conduct concerns.
The process aims to identify the top 10% of students who embody the humanistic values critical to exceptional medical practice.
The Society is supported by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
Criteria for Gold Humanism Honor Society:
- Consistently demonstrates compassion and empathy in the delivery of care to patients
- Illustrates professional behavior by example
- Shows respect for those with whom he/she interacts
- Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and competence in working with patients and family members of diverse ethnic or religious backgrounds
- Empowers patients and colleagues through effective communication and listening skills
- Interacts with patients and their families in ways that empower the patient to participate in their health care to the full extent they desire
- Pays attention and is sensitive to the patient’s psychological well-being
- Engenders trust and confidence among patients, staff, colleagues, and supervisors
- Is willing to help others and is willing to seek help from others
- Demonstrates concern for the general welfare of the community
- Seeks and accepts criticism; uses it to improve performance
- Is personally committed to self-evaluation
- Exhibits a commitment to enhancing positive interactions among all members of the health care team
- Through personal example encourages and empowers others to hold themselves to higher standards
- Demonstrates personal integrity and a willingness to take a stand on principle
- Serves as an advocate for patients and peers
