Hall and Peterson serve on the AMSSM board

Two University of Iowa sports medicine specialists are serving as board members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM).

Mederic M. Hall, MD, is serving his second two-year term and Andrew R. Peterson, MD, is in the second year of his first two-year term. Both physicians are widely recognized in the field of sports medicine.

Hall, UI clinical associate professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation and UI Sports Medicine director of musculoskeletal and sports ultrasound, is known internationally for his expertise in diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided procedures.

Hall says it is unusual for two physicians from the same institution to serve on the same board simultaneously.

“It is exceedingly rare,” says Hall, who is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. “This speaks highly of UI Sports Medicine’s diversity in subspecialty expertise.”

Peterson, UI clinical associate professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation, is board certified in pediatrics and has conducted significant research in the areas of concussion and youth participation in sports.

“We bring very different viewpoints to the board even though we practice together,” Peterson says.

AMSSM promotes sports medicine through education, research, advocacy, and excellence in patient care. The organization is a leader in developing clinical guidelines and is the home of the sports medicine fellowship curriculum.
