A major hurdle to developing and testing new anti-viral therapies and vaccines for COVID-19 is the lack of good, widely available animal models of the disease.

Marlan Hansen, MD, FACS, has been named chair and departmental executive officer of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Hansen’s appointment is effective July 1, pending approval from the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

Stanley Perlman, MD, PhD, physician and professor of microbiology and immunology in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, has been appointed to the Mark Stinski Chair in Virology.
