Celebration of Excellence in Research, Scholarship, Teaching, and Service set for April 24

Wall recognizing faculty research
Date: Wednesday, April 12, 2023

Seventeen University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine faculty members will be honored for their work as scientists, scholars, and educators at the third annual Celebration of Excellence in Research, Scholarship, Teaching, and Service.

The celebration will begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 24, in the Prem Sahai Auditorium in the Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF). A reception will follow in the Jean and Reneé Robillard Atrium in MERF.

UI Health Care faculty, staff, students, and volunteers are invited to attend or join via zoom webinar.

The celebration honors new inductees to the Carver College of Medicine Wall of Scholarship; the college’s newest Impact Scholars; and recipients of the college’s annual faculty awards. Brooks Jackson, MD, MBA, UI vice president for medical affairs and the Tyrone D. Artz Dean of the Carver College of Medicine, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Wall of Scholarship

The Wall of Scholarship acknowledges current UI Carver College of Medicine faculty who are first or senior authors of published research articles that have made a significant impact on a particular field of science or medicine.

Specifically, the research papers have been cited more than 1,000 times in subsequent published research articles, based on at least two of three recognized academic citation indices: Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science.

The following faculty member achieved Wall of Scholarship distinction during the 2022 calendar year:

  • Stanley Perlman, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and a University of Iowa Distinguished Chair

Perlman is one of 21 current Carver College of Medicine faculty members with plaques on the Wall of Scholarship. Three of his research articles have earned this designation—two articles were added last year, and one has been added for the April 24 ceremony, bringing the current total of research papers/plaques on the wall to 32.

Impact Scholars

Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are selected based on the Hirsch index, also known as the H-index, which represents the number of research papers a faculty member has published, and the papers’ impact as determined by how many times they have been cited by other scientists and scholars in subsequent research articles.

For example, a researcher with an H-index of 50 has published at least 50 articles that each have been cited at least 50 times. An H-index increases as multiple papers are cited multiple times. The H-index calculations for the Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are based on research abstract and citation data from Scopus. Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are faculty who have achieved H-index scores of 100 or higher (“gold” level) and 50 or higher (“silver” level).

The following faculty achieved Impact Scholar distinction during the 2022 calendar year:

Gold Level

  • Val Sheffield, MD, PhD, professor in the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics–Medical Genetics and Genomics, professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and the Martin and Ruth Carver Chair in Molecular Genetics

Silver Level:

  • Loreen Herwaldt, MD, professor in the Department of Internal Medicine–Infectious Diseases
  • Matthew Howard, MD, professor, chair and departmental executive officer in the Department of Neurosurgery and the John C. VanGilder Chair in Neurosurgery
  • Kaikobad Irani, MD, professor in the Department of Internal Medicine–Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Douglas Langbehn, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Psychiatry
  • Jeffrey Long, PhD, professor in the Department of Psychiatry
  • George Richerson, MD, PhD, professor, chair, and departmental executive officer in the Department of Neurology and the Roy J. Carver Chair in Neuroscience
  • Mary Wilson, MD, professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology
