Wall of Scholarship
The Wall of Scholarship acknowledges current UI Carver College of Medicine faculty who are first or senior authors of published research articles that have made a significant impact on a particular field of science or medicine.
Specifically, the research papers have been cited more than 1,000 times in subsequent published research articles, based on at least two of three recognized academic citation indices: Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science.
The following faculty members achieved Wall of Scholarship distinction during the 2024 calendar year:
- Joseph A. Buckwalter IV, MD, MS, professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation
- James D. Byrne, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology
- Joseph J. Cullen, MD, professor in the Department of Surgery–Gastrointestinal Surgery
- Matthew Bryant Howren, PhD, MPH, associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine
- Jose A. Morcuende, MD, PhD, professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation

The Wall of Scholarship designation is reserved for current Carver College of Medicine faculty. With the addition of this year’s scholars, 29 faculty members currently hold this distinction, bringing the current total of research papers/plaques to 42 publications.
Impact Scholars
Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are selected based on the Hirsch index, also known as the H-index, which represents the number of research papers a faculty member has published, and the papers’ impact as determined by how many times they have been cited by other scientists and scholars in subsequent research articles.
For example, a researcher with an H-index of 50 has published at least 50 articles that each have been cited at least 50 times. An H-index increases as multiple papers are cited multiple times. The H-index calculations for the Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are based on research abstract and citation data from Scopus. Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are faculty who have achieved H-index scores of 100 or higher (“gold” level) and 50 or higher (“silver” level).
The following faculty achieved Impact Scholar distinction during the 2024 calendar year:
Gold Level
- Eric Hoffman, PhD, professor in the Department of Radiology
- Richard J. Smith, MD, professor in the Department of Otolaryngology
Silver Level
- Michael Wall, MD, professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
