Why did you choose the UI Biomedical Science Graduate Program? What has it been like so far?
I chose the University of Iowa because it offered a diverse range of possible research topics on top of being in a fun and affordable city. The grad school experience has been great. I have found a lab I am comfortable and happy in.
What research are you performing?
I study endocrinology and how the brain controls metabolic activity.
What do you hope to do after you earn your degree?
I am hoping to pursue a post-doctoral position and continue on with a career in academia.
What is something that surprised you about this program?
I was surprised by how great of a college town Iowa City is.
What is your favorite part about being a graduate student at the Univeristy of Iowa?
I really enjoy the collaborative research atmosphere and being around talented and motivated scientists every day.
How do you manage your personal wellbeing as a PhD student?
I do my best to minimize the time I spend doing work at home, even if it means staying a little longer at the lab. This lets me get my mind away from my work when I'm at home.
What are some of your personal interests?
I have always liked exercising and recently I picked up training for triathlons. I also love cooking, watching sports, and reading books.
What would you say to a prospective student who is considering the University of Iowa for PhD training in the biomedical sciences?
The University of Iowa is a great place to learn how to do high quality science in a supportive and welcoming environment. We would love to have you here!
