Why did you choose the UI Biomedical Science Graduate Program? What has it been like so far?

I chose this program because it felt so welcoming, and everyone seemed to only have positive things to say about the program. So far, the experience has definitely been challenging as I adjust to graduate school, but it has also been very rewarding.

For those who are considering pursing a PhD, I think the most important thing is knowing what you are passionate about and deciding if a PhD is going to be the best route for you to reach your goals.

What research are you performing?

I am currently a rotation student in the Stephens lab, looking at the sorbitol pathway and how it relates to type 2 diabetes.

What do you hope to do after you earn your degree?

As of right now, I don't have a complete path planned out, but I hope to do research in a hospital setting so that my research can have a clinical component.

What is something that surprised you about this program?

I think what surprised me the most was how many opportunities there are to do what you are interested in. There are so many classes to choose from and so many labs open to students that it really feels like the possibilities of what to do your research on are endless.

What is your favorite part about being a graduate student at the University of Iowa?

My favorite part is getting to live in Iowa City and enjoying all the activities there are to do here!

How do you manage your personal wellbeing as a PhD student?

I always make sure to give myself breaks. Even if it's just a 20 minute break during the day to take a walk, it helps me clear my head and stop focusing on so much science.

What are some of your personal interests?

I like to hike, watch sports, visit local bars and breweries, and read.

What would you say to a prospective student who is considering the University of Iowa for PhD training in the biomedical sciences?

The University of Iowa Biomedical Sciences Program is such a welcoming program. If you ever have questions or doubts, you should reach out to someone in the program, and I know there will be plenty of people who are willing to help in whatever way they can.
