Students on track for scholarships at 2023 Carver Black and Gold Mile Run

University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine students made a run for it Sept. 24 at the university’s Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track. 

A total of 226 students from the college’s MD, PA (physician assistant), PT (physical therapy), Master of Clinical Anatomy, and Master of Clinical Nutrition programs took part in the sixth annual Carver Black and Gold Mile Run, which promotes healthy habits and lifestyle choices among students and health care professionals.  

The students competed for scholarship awards—applied toward tuition and fees—in three race categories: male and female individual 1-mile run and a mixed 4x400 relay (two males and two females per team). In addition, any student who completed the 1-mile run in fewer than 12 minutes also was eligible for a scholarship prize.  

By the end of the event, a total of $26,500 in scholarships was earned. Since the Carver Black and Gold Mile Run was first held in 2018, a total of $129,400 in scholarships has been awarded.

Male individual 1-mile run 

1st: Sam Ahrenholtz, M4 (4:22) 

2nd: Luke Guttormson, DPT1 (4:25) 

3rd: Chris Ahlers, M3 (4:28) 

  

Female individual 1-mile run 

1st: Samantha Corman, M1 (5:09) 

2nd: Maddie Block, M1 (5:22) 

3rd: Natalie Paulson, DPT1 (5:28) 

  

Mixed 4x400 relay  

1st: Acid Fast Bacteria team—Megan Mooberry, M2; Matthew Benson, M2; Samantha Corman, M1; Wade Pingel, M2 (4:03)
