Date: Tuesday, May 10, 2016

Children’s Miracle Network has awarded Joseph W. Turek, MD, PhD, a $50,000 research grant. The grant application, entitled “Multi Level Interactions between CaMKII and TRPV 1 Contribute to Aortic Aneurysm Progression Marfan Syndrome,” was approved for funding through June 2017.

Turek is an assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. He was inspired to pursue pediatric heart surgery following a formative experience with Aldo Castañeda, MD, who was the chief of cardiac surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital for 22 years. Turek participated in the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and Stead Family Department of Pediatrics Research Grant Program 2016.

Children’s Miracle Network increases funds and awareness for children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada. Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network has raised more than $5 billion.
