Match Day 2017: Medical students anticipate residency locations

Medical students at Match Day

Latest story: UI Carver College of Medicine graduates find out where they’re going next

Medical Students at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine look to make a match this week.

On Friday, March 17, medical students from around the world will discover where they will be doing their residencies. Known as Match Day, this nation-wide event is the most highly anticipated day of the year for most medical students. The UI Match Day reception will start at 10:30 a.m. with students and their families gathering in the MERF Atrium, and envelopes to be distributed at 11:00 a.m. Students will receive a message on Monday, March 13, notifying them that they have been matched, but it does not disclose the location.

Matches will be posted on the Match Week webpage.

Match Day Process

The process begins many months before the big event this Friday. Students create a list of their preferred hospitals and centers where they would like to work, and they interview at many of them starting in October. Following the interview, students then rank their location preferences in order, according to the National Residency Matching Program.

Residency program directors at health centers around the world also create a list of their own, which will rank candidates that coincide with the program’s preferences. Once the candidates and the programs have both created their lists, they are entered into the match registry. The lists are then run through an algorithm that ultimately “matches” candidates with programs.

Live Coverage on Social Media

Students and families are invited to share their photos using #UIMatchDay and #Match2017. The event will be streamed live on Carver College of Medicine's Facebook page from approximately 10:45-11:20 a.m. and live-tweeted from @IowaMed
