Meet Catherine Metz, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology

Catherine MetzWhat is your hometown?

Dubuque, IA

How/when did you become interested in science and/or medicine?

I have been interested in science and medicine as long as I can remember.  I am not sure where the idea first came from, but I knew I wanted to be a doctor since grade school.

When did you join the University of Iowa faculty?

July 2015

How or why did you choose to join the faculty at the University of Iowa?

I spent a short time in private practice and realized I missed the University atmosphere, teaching medical students and residents.  I also decided I wanted to be a sub-specialist in radiology, rather than a general radiologist.  My position at UIHC has allowed me both a teaching role and a clinical position specializing in body imaging.

Is there a teacher or mentor who helped shape your career?

I have not had any one specific mentor, but many people who have helped me learn and grown in my career, especially those in the body imaging section of the UIHC radiology department.

How do you see your faculty role impacting medicine and/or science?

I hope to increase my role in resident education by guiding the next generations of radiologists, not only in medical knowledge, but also in communications skills and physician wellness.

What is the biggest change you’ve experienced in your field since you were a student?

The technology in the field of radiology is continually improving, with significant advances in imaging quality and image utilization.  There also has been a significant increase in imaging guided procedures.

What one piece of advice would you give to today’s students?

Hold on to your love of learning and be adaptable.  Medicine is exciting, fast paced and continually advancing.

In what ways are you engaged in professional activities outside the University (i.e. population based research, mentoring high school students, sharing your leadership/ expertise with organizations or causes, speaking engagement off campus, etc.)?

I am actively involved in the Iowa Radiological Society, our state chapter of the American College of Radiology.

What are some of your outside (personal) interests?

I enjoy spending time with my family, reading science fiction novels, watching crime dramas and superhero movies.
