Various

Summer of Soul/Film Scene/Chauncey Swan

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary - part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival took place in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park).  Footage of the festival was never seen and largely forgotten - until now. Summer of Soul     includes never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and more.

Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It/FilmScene/Chauncey Swan

Over her 70+ year career, Rita Moreno defied both her humble upbringing and relentless racism to become a celebrated and beloved actor, one of the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) award winners of our time. Born into poverty on a Puerto Rican farm, Moreno and her seamstress mother immigrated to New York City when Moreno was five years old. After studying dance and performing on Broadway, Moreno was cast as any ethnic minority the Hollywood studios needed filled, be it Polynesian, Native American or Egyptian. Despite becoming the first Latina actress to win an Academy Award for her role as Anita in West Side Story, the studios continues to offer Moreno lesser roles as stereotypical ethnic minorities, ignoring her proven talent.

In the Heights/FilmScene/Chauncey Swan

The creator of Hamilton and the director of Crazy Rich Asians invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big.

Lights up on Washington Heights. The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

7/2-7/3      Iowa City Jazz Festival/Downtown Iowa City/various

6/3         Aviya Kushner (reading)

Prairie Lights | 7pm

Aviya Kushner's debut poetry collection, Wolf Lamb Bomb, revives and reimagines the Book of    Isaiah in an intimate conversation between woman and prophet. In the aftermath of September 11th, ongoing violence in the Middle East, and resurgent antisemitism, Kushner reflects on a   Biblical understanding of humanity and justice. Wolf Lamb Bomb wonders equally about our relationship with an inherited past and our desire to understand the precarious present. These poems place the prophet Isaiah in the position of poet, crooner, and rival as they search for a guide in poetry and in life.

6/3      AFROFUTURISM AS EXPRESSION: LITERATURE, DANCE, AND BLACK ABSTRACTION

Stanley Museum/Virtual/7pm

Afrofuturism is an invitation into the portals of Black possibilities within familiar and unfamiliar   realms. Join the University of Iowa Stanley Museum for a conversation moderated by Stanley  Associate Writer & Collections/Exhibitions Associate Derek (DK) Nnuro on the expressions of those possibilities in literature and dance, and a work of Black abstract art from the collection. Q&A to follow.

6/4-6/6    16mm Camaraless Film Workshop | PS1 Media Arts Co-op | various

Center for Afrofuturist Studies

In this workshop you will learn how to take easily accessible items, household items, and 16mm film to make your own film art pieces. You will learn a variety of techniques from scratching, or bleaching 16mm film images, hand painting/drawing with nail polish or markers, and dye transfer from magazines with hot water and tape. These pieces can be abstract or meticulously animated using the items at your disposal. This can be a cathartic practice, or a tool of resistance and disruption to conventional narratives. By the end of the workshop, you will have the know- how to sustain your own 16mm filmmaking (camera-less) practice using materials you have right at home.

6/5     Queer as Form

A poetry writing workshop | virtual | 11am-1pm

When we talk about queer poetry, our conversations often center on the content of literature.  We focus, understandably, on literature as a tool for representing lives and loves that had been  left to the poetic and social margins. In this needed attention on queer content, do we have anything to say about queer form? Is queer poetry just using old tools to tell new stories? Are there poetic forms that are themselves queer?

6/12      Caleb Rainey (spoken word performance) | Englert | 10am

We are walking stories, a combination of our experiences, our family history, and the people around us. Being able to capture those small, specific moments and details is what often      distinguishes a good story from a great one. In this workshop designed for 9th-12th graders, we will practice using a series of poetic vignettes to create an overarching story about identity and heritage. We craft our stories with the pieces we have.

Caleb “The Negro Artist” Rainey is an Iowa-based spoken word poet that has performed in multiple cities in over half a dozen states, including Chicago and New York City. He was named 2020’s Best Poet/Spoken Word Performer in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City; and he’s the winner of the Des Moines Poetry Slam, the Iowa City Poetry Slam, and finalist for the UNESCO City of Literature Global Slam – Iowa City. Caleb is the author of two books, LOOK, BLACK BOY, and   HEART NOTES along with publications in BEST EMERGING WRITERS IN IOWA 2019, the LITTLE VILLAGE, and BLACK ART; REAL STORIES.
