Culturally Responsive Care

In order to create an environment of inclusion where individual differences are respected and all feel welcome as well as improve access, the following were developed to provide a range of diversity resources, educational materials, cultural enrichment and acclimation programs for members of the Carver College of Medicine and UI Health Care community. 

Culturally Responsive Health Care in Iowa Conference

UI Health Care, the UIHC Department of Nursing, the College of Public Health and the other health science colleges co-sponsor the annual Culturally Responsive Health Care in Iowa conference. The goal of this multidisciplinary, interprofessional conference is to improve the delivery of culturally sensitive and responsive health care to increasingly diverse patient populations.  CME is offered.

UI Health Care Culturally Responsive Health Care Award

This annual award honors the extraordinary efforts that an individual or group has made to consciously practice culturally responsive health care; to stress the importance of inclusive excellence and its impact on our patients, families, and coworkers.

UIHC: Addressing Health Disparities Pilot Grant

Addressing health disparities is a key priority for UI Health Care as we endeavor to improve healthcare for all patients. The future health of our community will be influenced substantially by improving the health of people affected by health disparities. Addressing disparities in health will require innovation, new knowledge, enhanced efforts at preventing disease, and the promotion and delivery of appropriate care. This research pilot grant program will support research that addresses health disparities within our community and patient populations. 

Mobile Clinic

The University of Iowa Mobile Clinic is an interdisciplinary student organization founded in 2002,  that provides free health screening, prevention, education, and basic health services to under served populations.

LGBTQ Top PerformerUI Healthcare Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Clinic 

UI Health Care established the state’s only clinic which offers comprehensive primary care for LGBTQ patients. The clinic’s health care professionals and staff have expertise in the needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning communities.  Every staff member has received LGBTQ-specific cultural humility training through the Safe Zone Project to ensure that the clinic environment is welcoming and affirming for all patients. 

Culture VisionCultureVision (CV)

CV is a user-friendly, comprehensive database with information on more than 50 ethnic and cultural groups across 12 clinical and non-clinical areas. This tool assists health care professionals in the provision of patient-centered and culturally responsive care of our increasingly diverse patient population.  CV can be accessed by anyone with a uiowa.edu email address through various entry points including EPIC, The Loop, The Point and on every clinical workstation desktop.
