Mission
To make shadowing opportunities more accessible to students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine who are exploring careers in medicine.
The program will provide up to one half day shadow experience per semester.
Basic Eligibility Requirements
- Minimum GPA of 2.5
- Be a currently enrolled student at the University of Iowa
- View Professionalism Training with Dr. Denise Martinez, Interim Associate Vice President, Office of Health Parity and Associate Dean, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- Complete mandatory HIPAA compliance training and health paperwork prior to shadowing
- Proof of Covid-19 vaccination
Other factors for consideration include that a student:
- Identifies or is from a backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (such as racial/ethnic backgrounds underrepresented in medicine, economically or educationally disadvantaged background, etc)
- Have demonstrated interest in issues affecting underserved populations and health disparities
- Are members of the University of Iowa MAPS Chapters (Minority Association of Pre-Health Students)
You will be required by the end of the semester to submit through this site a brief summary of your experience, what you learned, how you have benefited and feedback on the program.

Online: MANDATORY Professionalism and HIPAA training. If you have ever participated in a training with Dr. Martinez, you are exempt from this requirement. If not, you must participate in an online training module. A link to the module will be sent out once applications have been reviewed and will be available during the dates listed above.
Physician Shadowing experiences will be assigned throughout the spring semester dependent upon department and student availability.
