Women's History Month - CCOM Highlighted Alumni: Dr. Florence Shafiq

Florence Shafiq, MD, MS

Dr. Florence Shafiq is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine. She received both her MS (Zoology) and MD degrees from the University of Iowa.  She was the first Black female to receive an M.D. from CCOM.  She completed her residency and Fellowship programs at the Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta GA.

Her career path began as a Department of Medicine Faculty member at Emory.  Her advancement as a Medical Director includes the following: Medical Director for Humana Health Plan; Medical Director and Associate Professor for Morehouse School of Medicine; Regional Medical Director for the US Military Health System covering three states and Puerto Rico. She also has 20 years’ experience as a Medical Consultant for the Federal Disability Branch for Social Security, Region 7.  She ventured into commercial managed care as the Sr. Medical Director for BlueCross BlueShield of Texas.

She moved back to Georgia where she transitioned into the governmental managed care arena and served as a Senior Corporate Medical Director for a major health plan, covering five states. She was later the Sr. Medical Director for Aetna Health Care covering four states: GA, LA, AL, and MS.  She retired for about a year and a half and then returned to medical management as a Medical Director for Anthem.  In 2020, Dr. Shafiq retired again and is actively enjoying retirement life.

She has served on several Boards and received accolades throughout her career.  She received Proclamations from our Untied States House of Representatives Congressman Hank Johnson and from the Dekalb County Commissioner Mereda Johnson. She continues to volunteer on Martin Luther King Holiday with service projects for various organizations. She provided snacks for the voters at the recent run-off election for Georgia democrats to the US Senate. 

Dr. Shafiq is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was initiated into the Stone Mountain-Lithonia Alumnae Chapter on March 28, 2003. During her seven (7) year stay in Plano, Texas she joined the Collin County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc

Dr. Shafiq is the proud mother of two adult daughters, both of whom are also members of the Stone Mountain-Lithonia Alumnae Chapter. Aaliyah Shafiq Ely was initiated through Xi Tau Chapter at Harvard University.  She is now Vice-President, Sparkling Flavors for North America at The Coca-Cola Company.  Malikah (Shafiq) Register was initiated through Zeta Psi Chapter at the University of Georgia.  She is a certified professional Life Coach.  She kkis also the graduation coach and the site coordinator for the PEER Program at Salem High School (Rockdale County).

Dr. Shafiq is a member of Berean Christian Church in Stone Mountain, GA.  Her hobbies include traveling nationally and internationally, attending cultural events, and attending sports events, particularly football (she is a season ticket holder for the Atlanta Falcons) and basketball.  Dr. Shafiq continues to enjoy hosting dinners and parties, where one can often find her on the dance floor.
