University of Iowa Health Care faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend an investiture ceremony honoring four Carver College of Medicine faculty at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Levitt Center for University Advancement.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures helped bring out a record number of University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine students for the fourth annual Carver Black and Gold Mile Run Sept. 12 at the university’s Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track.

University of Iowa researcher Ellen van der Plas hopes that by examining the brain development of children battling leukemia, she can improve treatment paradigms and minimize potential long-term side effects.

Anthony Piscopo is in his second year of medical school and will be presenting his first-in-human study results of recording the activity inside arteries of awake patients. His research will be presented at the Carver College of Medicine 2021 Medical Student Research Conference September 15-16.

Ian McElree is a first-year medical student at the Carver College of Medicine and will be presenting the research he conducted in Dr. Vignesh Packiam’s lab this past summer at the college’s 2021 Medical Student Research Conference.

Soham Ali is in his fourth year of medical school and will be presenting his research at the 2021 Medical Student Research Conference September 15-16.

Stephanie Saey, a third-year medical student, is looking forward to the annual Medical Student Research Conference. Though not certain if she will present at this year’s conference due to data collection still underway, she is eager to see the projects her peers have been working on. Saey participated in the research conference as an M1 and M2 and is also pursuing the Research Distinction Track at the Carver College of Medicine.

Alexander Bassuk, MD, PhD, will become chair and departmental executive officer of the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, effective Sept. 1. Bassuk also will serve as physician-in-chief of Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
